Proposed change to US Constitution: Functional constituencies based on political leanings. To start, one Senator each would represent conservatives, liberals, and moderates. Any other political label which gains ten percent or more of registered voters would also be represented.

How would "leanings" be distinguished from parties in practice?

People would choose which constituency they wanted to be part of. (One to a customer.) Parties would then compete for votes within these functional constituencies.

At first, one major party would probably dominate in the conservative and another in the liberal constituency. But after a few elections, you might have the Constitution Party outpolling the Republicans among conservatives and the Greens outpolling the Democratic Party among liberals.
