Wednesday February 15, 2012. On my way to the 38th St LRT station, saw that Miss Daisy's Place was open. (Combination thrift store and alterations service.) Bought several pairs of socks for a quarter each.
On to Dollar Tree.
Then Rainbow Foods. Their rewards card usually only gives perks for BP (lower gas prices.) But currently they also offer a lower price on holiday ham. (Are they not saying "Easter ham" so's not to offend Jews who might buy ham for Hannukah?)
***Speculations reading at DreamHaven Books: S.N. Arly, a short story closer to old fairy tales than most contempory fantasy.
***Did a writing exercise, the prompt being my annoyance at Tom Godwin's "The Cold Equations." (The one which ends with the hero throwing a teenage girl out the airlock.) I'm generally annoyed with stories in which there's only one solution to the big problem; one morally repugnant to the reader. Which, I'm told, isn't what Godwin intended to write -- but editor John Campbell insisted on such an ending.
My alternative solution isn't original. But the characters developed in unexpected directions. I knew beforehand that the hero didn't care enough about other people to understand why anyone would enjoy killing them; but I didn't expect him to be as coldhearted as he turned out. If anyone's interested, "Warming the Cold Equations" is up at
